When is the Right Time to Sign Up for Medicare?

Knowing when to sign up for Medicare is just as important as knowing how to sign up. Signing up late can result in penalties and delays in coverage. In this post, I’ll explain the best times to sign up for Medicare and what you need to know to avoid penalties.

1. Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the best time to sign up for Medicare. It’s a 7-month period that starts 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes the month of your 65th birthday, and ends 3 months after your birthday.

Example: If you turn 65 in June, your sign-up period will start in March and end in September.

If you sign up during this period, your Medicare coverage will start on the first day of the month you turn 65.

2. Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

If you are still working and have health insurance from your job, you can delay signing up for Medicare without penalties. Once you stop working or lose your job insurance, you have 8 months to sign up for Medicare.

Important: If you have group health coverage from your job, make sure to check with your Human Resources department to confirm that your group health plan is considered “creditable coverage” (this means it’s as good as Medicare). If your job coverage is not considered credible, you will need to sign up for Medicare when you turn 65 to avoid penalties.

Note: COBRA coverage is not considered credible coverage, so you will need to sign up for Medicare when you turn 65, even if you have COBRA.

3. General Enrollment Period (GEP)

If you miss your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) and don’t qualify for the Special Enrollment Period (SEP), you can sign up during the General Enrollment Period, which is from January 1 to March 31 each year. However, if you sign up during this period, your Medicare won’t start until July 1. You may also face a penalty for late enrollment.

For Part B, the penalty is 10% for each full 12-month period you could have signed up but didn’t.

Conclusion

The best time to sign up for Medicare is during your Initial Enrollment Period, but if you miss that, you have other options like the Special Enrollment Period or the General Enrollment Period. Just make sure you sign up on time to avoid penalties and delays.
